Hey there! I’m Dr. Emily Rhodes

Licensed Exotic Animal Veterinarian | Reptile Health Specialist | Animal Welfare Advocate | Age 41
Texas-based vet who believes every reptile deserves ethical, evidence-based care.

My Story

My journey into reptile medicine began in veterinary school, where I quickly realized that exotic animals—especially reptiles—were underserved in the clinical world. While many students focused on cats and dogs, I spent my free time shadowing exotic animal specialists and studying herpetology.

Over time, I saw just how many reptiles were suffering from preventable illnesses due to misinformation or inadequate husbandry. That realization drove me to dedicate my career to improving reptile health through both clinical care and public education.

The Turning Point

The moment that solidified my path was treating a severely dehydrated leopard gecko that had been kept without a proper heat source. After days of supportive care and careful monitoring, the gecko made a full recovery — and the joy on its owner’s face reminded me that education is just as important as treatment.

From that day forward, I made it my mission not only to treat reptiles but to give owners the tools and knowledge they need to prevent such situations in the first place.

What I Learned the Hard Way

Early in my practice, I discovered that even well-meaning owners can unintentionally harm their pets. I once treated a case of metabolic bone disease caused by incorrect UVB lighting. It was heartbreaking, but it reinforced the importance of clear, accessible, and science-backed care guidance.

I also learned that building trust with reptile owners means listening without judgment and meeting them where they are in their learning journey.

My Approach Now

Today, my work blends veterinary science with real-world practicality. I provide clear, step-by-step care recommendations that meet professional health standards but are realistic for everyday pet owners.

From proper nutrition plans to disease prevention strategies, I focus on giving reptile keepers the confidence to make informed, compassionate decisions that support long-term health and welfare.

What I Believe

  • Prevention is the best medicine for reptile health.
  • Ethical care requires both scientific knowledge and empathy.
  • Every reptile, no matter how small, deserves a high standard of welfare.
  • Education is the bridge between veterinary science and pet ownership.
  • Small husbandry improvements can make a big difference in quality of life.
