California-based reptile lover who believes every leopard gecko deserves a safe, enriching home.
My Story
My fascination with reptiles began when I was just a teenager in high school, caring for my very first leopard gecko in a small terrarium I had set up in my bedroom. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a lifelong passion. I spent countless hours reading books on herpetology, observing my geckos’ behaviors, and experimenting with different enclosure setups.
Over the years, my home turned into a mini reptile sanctuary. Friends and family often came to me for advice on reptile care, from diet tips to creating comfortable habitats. This personal journey eventually inspired me to launch Reptizen.com—a place where I could share my knowledge and help others create safe, healthy, and beautiful environments for their geckos.
The Turning Point
The defining moment came when I rescued an underweight, lethargic leopard gecko from a local pet store. Its habitat had poor lighting, inadequate heating, and incorrect substrate. Nursing it back to health opened my eyes to just how much misinformation exists in the reptile community.
That rescue changed my mission: I wanted to make sure beginner reptile keepers had access to clear, science-based, and compassionate care guides. It was no longer just about keeping reptiles—it was about advocating for their well-being.
What I Learned the Hard Way
In my early days, I made mistakes that taught me valuable lessons. I once used sand as a substrate because it was marketed as “natural,” only to discover it could cause dangerous impaction. I also underestimated how critical proper temperature gradients were for digestion and activity.
Through trial, error, and research, I learned that small mistakes can have big consequences in reptile care. That’s why I’m committed to sharing reliable, evidence-backed advice so others can avoid the same pitfalls.
My Approach Now
Today, my reptile care philosophy is rooted in combining real-world experience with the latest research in herpetology. I focus on replicating natural habitats as closely as possible — from temperature and humidity levels to enclosure enrichment that encourages natural behaviors.
I believe in educating owners not just on “how” to care for reptiles, but on “why” each aspect of their setup matters. My goal is to empower keepers to make informed, compassionate decisions that support their geckos’ long-term health.
What I Believe
- Every reptile deserves a safe, species-appropriate environment.
- Education is the best prevention against neglect or poor care.
- Naturalistic setups promote both mental and physical well-being.
- Reptile keeping should be guided by science, not marketing trends.
- Patience and observation are key to understanding your gecko’s needs.
